Professional and social networking sites(ex: Linkedin and Xing) in Middle East?
I know only of LinkedIn which my colleagues and contacts have used. I found no use as of it as yet... =)

Where do social networking sites get their revenue from?

I was just really wondering where social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook.com get their revenue from. this question came to me while on Cnbc.com and i saw that microsoft was considering purchasing facebook.com for $6 billion. and it said that facebook was worth well over 2 billion. it is free to join these sites so where does the revenue come from?

Where do social networking sites get their revenue from?
advertising on the website. pay-per-click, consumer surveys, and commercials. they can also sell demographic information. if 95% of the 15 year olds on the site do a certain thing, that info is valuable and can be sold.
Reply:More social networks are moving to subscriber because they offer more value
Reply:Advertising! Companies will pay big bucks when the audience is 150 million people.

Are social networking sites, like myspace and facebook, actually making people lonelier?

I came across an article discussing 7 reasons why the 21st century is making people miserable. %26lt;%26gt;http://www.cracked.com/index.php?name=Ne...

One of the author's reasons talks about how "online company" lacks real world expressions like body-language and sarcasm. According to a study cited by the article, what we verbally say to someone accounts for 7% of actual meaning, while non-verbal gestures account for the other 93%.

Face-to-face interaction is crucial for our well-being. Social networking sites offer an easier and more tempting substitution for this, but deprive us of what we really need. So do you believe Myspace and Facebook are, ironically, making people feel lonelier by replacing real, physical interaction?

Are social networking sites, like myspace and facebook, actually making people lonelier?
I don't think so. I believe social networking will help you get more friends. Myself, I found most of my old friends thru social networking and that's how we get in touch mostly. True, there is no physical interaction. But hey, even with friends that from the same city, we hardly meet each other, right? So, my answer is still no, it won't make you lonelier.

The difference is just how you communicate to each other.
Reply:Great question and response. I honestly think that yes in some cases and no in other cases. I feel that this applies to all of the web, not just social networking sites.
Reply:No! I strongly disagree. People who join out of loneliness in the first place, maybe yes, as they are looking for something personal which just can't be given. Most people I know join because others use it, so they meet up more. It's not over used either, since loads of people still go out together. It can help bring people together, it more than often does, but those who are alienated by society and use it to feel less lonely I think maybe are going to be disappointed. They shouldn't use myspace or facebook as people mostly give comments, not conversation.

How can small businesses use social networking sites such as MySpace?

MySpace, Facebook and other social networks have become extremely popular on the Web. How can small businesses develop a presence on these social networks? How can small businesses use these sites to get customers? Examples of successful small business entrepreneurs using these social networking sites will be appreciated.

How can small businesses use social networking sites such as MySpace?
I've actually contemplated creating a MySpace for the business but have hesitated mostly due to the very nature of MySpace. It's primarily, as you state, a social networking site that's really geared towards person-to-person socialization.

I also think that the nature of the small business will determine if a valid presence can be made or not. For example, businesses geared towards the entertainment industries may fare better than say insurance companies due to the inordinate amount of musicians, wanna be models %26amp; actors on MySpace.

There are a few avenues on MySpace that may be worth exploring:

1) Groups: Create a group centered around your small business. Recruit members, encourage discussion, publish posts, etc.

2) Events: Create an event centered around your business, be it in a physical location or out in the virtual world.

3) Classifieds: Pretty self-explanatory

Hmm, now that I took some time to devote some thought to it, I may look into MySpace again. Thanks for the inspiration imisidro!

The social network sites that seem to be more advantageous to small businesses are Squidoo, Ryze %26amp; LinkedIn. I'm a member of all three but admittedly have not had much time to devote to exploration.

I'm not familiar with any successful small business entrepreneurs using MySpace or Facebook. Sorry I can't help you there.

Hope that helps!
Reply:I usually see a lot of musicians using those sites for promotion. They promote their myspace page on external communications - i.e link on web site, flyers so that their fans know when their next gig is, how to purchase CDs, etc. But usually the promotion of the page is done out-side of myspace.

Social Networking Sites?

Social Networking Sites?
The government has some suggestions about how to help protect children while spending time on social networking sites:

- Help your kids understand what information should be private.

- Use privacy settings to restrict who can access and post on your child's website.

- Explain that kids should post only information that you — and they — are comfortable with others seeing.

- Remind your kids that once they post information online, they can't take it back.

- Know how your kids are getting online.

- Talk to your kids about bullying.

- Talk to your kids about avoiding sex talk online.

- Tell your kids to trust their gut if they have suspicions.

- Read sites’ privacy policies.

- Go where your kids go online.

- Review your child’s friends list.

(see the link in the source for more detail on all these - it's aimed toward parents, though)

Whether each of these are appropriate in your situation is up to you to figure out. Personally, I think you won't be able to prevent children from using any particular web site; they can always go to a library, school, or friend's house, or possibly use their cell phone to get onto the Internet. The question is, will they feel comfortable talking to someone, including siblings or parents, about those sites in the event that they are being bullied or are concerned about someone that's been talking to them? If your brother is afraid you'll yell at him for using a social networking site when you (or your parents) told him not to, he might not talk to you when he has questions about what's safe to do on them.
Reply:They can only be dangerous if he gives out too much information. He should only talk to people he knows, keep his identity a secret, and know that he should never meet anyone he does not know.

Are social networking sites changing our daily behaviour?

These days we have so many social networking sites, no one who is regular on web is oblivious to them. What is the impact of these sites on the mind of todays youth..it's a positive one or its on the other side of the number line?

Are social networking sites changing our daily behaviour?
Pros: convenient way to meet many people around the world (especially if you are shy).

Cons: very addictive and can never replace the emotions and experiences of physically socializing with another person.
Reply:Who cares.
Reply:Well, I only came on-line to check my e-mails and I thought I'll just see what questions are flying around, I've only been out of bed for 10 minutes! ha ha
Reply:Yes, quite a lot. First and foremost, it has made our world into global village. However, it has also addiction side which may carefully avoided especially by youth.

Are social networking sites a good place to find leads?

I was just wondering if Social Networking sites are a good way to find leads. I was thinking about using MySpace to advertise my business "College Network Travel" but with so many distractions I keep thinking no one will really notice exactly what it is that I'm trying to get across. What do you think%26gt;

Are social networking sites a good place to find leads?
Hi!

I would disagree with MAX. Adwords are for experienced people, who have done testing and research with ads and so on...

Social networking works but it demands that you establish good relationships(that means putting time in) and it can be very powerful!

One of the best resources that I have found is TrafficEra.

It's a social networking community, a blog, traffic exchange and discussion forum all in one!

Hope this helps!
Reply:Myspace was not designed to be a commercial website and you could get your profile deleted if you advertise and annoy someone. You would do better to go to some of the business networking sites. At least you don't run the risk of getting in trouble there or having your profile deleted.

I think all these sites go from free to premium and have listed the levels you need to do what you want.

Bizprenuer (free)

Direct Matches (no need to go higher than the $9.95 a month)

Home Biz (free)

Ryze (free)

Adlandpro (free)

Ojeez (free)

Digg (free)

These are just a few. However, in all honesty I have never found internet advertising to be very effective, whether it be spamming in a forum, group, being on social networks, sending out emails, safelists, etc.... Most people are out there spamming their deal -or advertising as some call it, and are very rarely interested in what you have to offer.

I think you are right - too many distractions - no matter where you go. You need seriously compelling ad copy to bring people to you or something other than the 'hey, come join or fly with me'.

If I can help further, just let me know.

Reply:how about you forget MySpace and focus on the leads from Facebook.

It is for students, very clear design, has groups where you can join and promote your business, offers marketplace, link and video sharing, and thousands other features.

It is just wonderful for your purposes. I'm currently making a research on Marketing and Advertising on Facebook at a blog called biz-tips-spot with thoughts on how it can be used as advertising vehicle for leads generation.
Reply:Yea, if your willing to spend the time on it, it'll payoff.

It ain't a quick fix, you'll spend a lot of time, repeating yourself, like adding friends to multiple accounts, researching your target audience, testing, and most importantly interacting with the community at large.

Myspace has gotten very very on trying to sell stuff and as a result have made it pretty difficult.

The new thing at the moment is Facebook, I keep hearing stories about how people are making money off of strong profiles.

Social Networking sites and marketing - is it worth the time and effort?

I have been thinking about joining into myspace and others to help promote a business. Does this work? Is it really worth the time to set up a nice "space" or do the members of these places just view such things as spam?

Any experience with linkedIn?

Any lists of niche social networking sites - especially those focused on business or education?

Social Networking sites and marketing - is it worth the time and effort?
I have a myspace account for personal use and I hate it when people want to network because they have a business. I mark them as spam all the time. Whenever I talked to people about different products, they always say I am a sales man and don't listen to me.

If you want to set up a myspace account because you need more business, than you should develop your own site.

I can help you build your own site and get the traffic you need. I will show you the same system that I use to get results on the net. It is simple to use and takes as much effort and time as using myspace except you own it and control it.

My site is geared towards mlm people but if you are not an mlm person, that is ok. It will work for all business professions.

Top social networking sites?

I just created a list of top social networking sites. it is called

www.topnetworkingsites.com.

I will like to know how to get people to know about this site

Top social networking sites?
you have to list your site in most of the famous search engines, like Google.

i think there is special software that does this job for you.

also you have to promote for your site, if you cannot afford buying ads, maybe e-mail all your friends about it, maybe put it as your homepage in your profiles online. you can also post about it in online forums and communities.
Reply:The best way to get in good with the search engines is to develop quality content for your users to enjoy and use.

I'd suggest going to http://www.socalspaces.com and posting a profile. That way you can use the site as a launching point for your site. Piggy back on myspace and friendster too. Report It

Reply:You don't have G2Bay in this list. This is a social networking site where people help each other make and save money. People post their photos, blogs, news, product and service reviews and talk about the stocks they own. Every user gets a Million Dollar Page where advertisers pay to find the right customers. This is a no-spam site where people have to pay $1 to send an email. This is a totally legit site with no joining fees, no credit cards. Also you can list classifieds for free.

Social networking sites for 12 year olds??

K, so i'm 12 years old and comeing on 13 and i want to know if there is any safe social networking sites for 12 year olds.... MySpace, Bebo and loads of other sites i know have an age limit like 14 and 17.... are there any other sites for ages 12 and over??

Thanx,

Social networking sites for 12 year olds??
Well,

MatMice (http://matmice.com/) is pretty cool for the 8+ crowd. It's very similar to Myspace but a lot safer. The only thing is that you have to be "invited" to join. I would be happy to invite you, or there is a place on their site where one of the founders can send you an invitation. Another idea would be the A Girls World Online PenPal Club (http://members.agirlsworld.com/index.htm... It's 12.00 a year but is very safe and fun. I met one of my BFFs there, and she lives in England. Good Luck!

EDIT: I just looked around and I'm not sure if you can get an invite or not. Like I said, feel free to email me if you'd like an invite from me.
Reply:You could try Facebook, if you're 12 almost 13 you must be in 7th grade so Facebook would be good for you.
Reply:whatever you do; dont lie and make a myspace or anything like that. --it can be very dangerous for such a young girl. be careful and if there is nothing stick to email.

REMEMBER though that any person can pass themselves as a kid on any kids site. So always keep a eye out for "wierd" comments
Reply:No but at your age, try www.disney.com as it is in your age group.
Reply:If you want a clean and child/parent friendly site go for Xivio! Xivio is a wonderful virtual world with filtered chat, games and contests hosted by both users and Guardians. Xivio is free or you can buy a premium membership. However you don't feel as though you are severely lacking like other sites if you're not premium. You can win premium items during the games and contests and you earn vio=xivio currency just by staying online in Xivio.

You also can win random vio awards. This site is monitored by live Guardians aka Moderators, contains a word filter and has parental controls.

They also have a Hompy which stand for Homepage and similar to a Myspace page only family friendly. You can load music, videos, and pictures to personalize the page in your own way. This too is free.

Xivio also contains parental controls much like the tv rating system that lets parents adujust their childs account to the level they feel to be right for their child.

Should social networking sites be encouraged?

There is very clearly a rage over social networking sites these days and you can find users of all age groups as part of these sites. Should there be any hard restrictions and checks on the age of those part of such sites? Do these sites hamper education of school students by biting into their time? Can't they wait to network till they are done with their school education?

Should social networking sites be encouraged?
In this modern world, occupied by the internet , social networking sites are a necessary evil. But nevertheless, certain factors must be considered before allowing members in these sites.Age barrier is the most effective and practical way to control the school goers from getting attracted by these networking sites. There must be some hard core rules to prevent misuse of these sites.Parents must also ensure that their children use the net productively and not destructively. Though these sites provide a window into a wider world with more prospects, all the users must know their limits and use these for beneficial purposes, knowing that every silver has its tarnish, and every opportunity has

its own discomforts.

These sites which encourage networking must ensure that only eligible people, those who do not create disgusting scenario, must be able to access and give material to these sites. Abuse in any form must be reported and severe action taken against it.

Only with the combined effects of Parents, Guardians , Net workers and the site owners and moderators can the networking sites be of more use than they trouble, and their evils can be controlled
Reply:i don't think they should be encouraged; all i've seen come out of them is gossip and long conversations about nothing. social networking sites, as far as i know, only have negative social effects. it seems like a big waste of time; pick up the phone, or go outside to meet people, i say.
Reply:I think they should be encouraged because it´s a good idea to know people and socialize, the earlier the better. Kids that like school will continue to do well and have friends to talk about what they are learning.
Reply:I think you mean "Should they be Discouraged." People can manage their own time, and that includes kids.

Afterall, you're busy posting here, a complete waste of time. Maybe, somebody should be stopping you from doing so.
Reply:Social Networking can be education too. I have always felt that social networking sites essentially boil down to a study in human psychology.
Reply:Isnt yahoo answers a social netwoorking site or do you mean chatting zones

well if its yahoo then i think its greta for the community to participate in a site like this

not only do we benefit from each others experience and words of wisdom we feel akinned to the community as a whole and it genertaes feelings of warmth and acceptance with transverses prejudice and other barriers raised by our media
Reply:I was gonna say Why not?

but hey...Good Thinking....I mean I'm a Uni student and sometimes I get carried away....but I also have learned to controle my self.....

But really....These sites should have some sort of restrictions.....good thought!

Social networking sites bad for mental health?

I am a member of three different social network sites, only because a friend from college invited me to join. I'm a loner but she is social and she has a big list of friends, and I look through her profile and see messages she has sent to her friends and I can't help but think she cares about them much more than me. I also look through her pics and see the fun times she has with these friends and they look so close in the pics. I have barely no one on my friends lists and I can't help but think that I am just an accessory to add to her friends list to make her look more popular. We had a romance once but that was five years ago and we never kissed or anything but held hands and hugged as she was in a relationship. I feel that social networking sites are making my depression worse and am thinking of quitting them for good. Anyone else feel that these sites suck?

Social networking sites bad for mental health?
if you are a loner, but would like to change that, you can do what i'm trying right now. practicing doing new things that i don'tfeel comfortable doing but yearn to do, and allow myself to do them even while i feel uncomfortable. Because the thing you have to realize is...that most other people can't even tell hwo you're feeling or what you're thinking. You're the only one who knows you best..these other peope don't know You. You know, they can't recoginzie the way you are..they need much more time to be able to do that..after they've gotten to know you. Now, it does happen, though, that someone who is in the same situtation as you or has been..can recognize how you are feeling or whatever it is..what you are thinking even. But that's usually like Not the case though..Most people won't even notice you're feeling insecure or uncomfortable about this new experience you're going through at the time [when trying something new] and they're focuzed ont ehmselves and are insecure too, so if anything they will just think that it's something they did wrong ...like ok that person is a little snobby..hmm..or like..you know? they'll think it's about THEm. LOL so common with the human population. LEMME TELL YA. lol we're all so self-absorbed...so don't beat urself up about being self centered or too worried about ur own needs...lmao...u know like the only reason it could be constantly on ur mind if it is..would be cuz u haven't tried and gotten through the epxerience in one piece lol. so just try it and let urself be ok with not feeling comfortable while doing it. It's a challenge, but many things in life are.

always remember, tho, everyone is self-absorbed and everyone is usually mostly thinking about how You're Perceiving THEM or whatever it is instead of the other way around. but when u've been urself and have felt that u accept urself after that experience..u feel much safer in the world..and much safer in ur own skin. Cuz u now trust who you are more now and feel more capable as a result. You feel more capable of doing something new and getting through in one piece. it won't be that daunting anymore and you won't feel like new things will be all that much of an obstacle anymore. So remember...if you wanna feel in control of your life, you have to lower perfectionistic standards and realzie that it's ok to feel uncomofrtable with a new experience..but know that the other person usually won't be able to tell if ur uncomfortable, and if they do by some chance, they won't care cuz they'll feel flattered u've gotten the courage to talk to them.....remember everyone is self-centered. And so...allow urself to make mistakes and to try new things and experiment..don't be too hard on urself like that and see that doing something for the first few times is always challenging, but it can be fun if you just allow urself to be uncomfortable and realize ur '[already, yes] succeeding jsut by Trying!! big w00t to that=]] Hehe. Good luck.

xxTakeCare

I had perfectionistic parents..plus I've been shy for a long time. Don't let ur parents attitude get to you. Fockers. lol. They really never made me feel comfortable with mistakes tho. So anyway. =] You know what to do. Right? 'Luck.
Reply:Sounds like a little depression jealousy coming out, huh? Not to worry, it happens all the time.

I think you really like this girl more than you say and are feeling a little "jealous" of her friends for using up her time, maybe? Or could you just be envious of the friends she has because you aren't an easy friend maker?

Hon, only you can change things about you. Get out more and meet "real" people. Anonymous people on the internet aren't really "friends" now, are they? Friends are those who stick by you, they're always there for you, they talk with you and to you. Wouldn't you rather have a warm blooded person to talk with than an internet "friend"?

I don't know if I've made any sense to you, but I just think you are too young to be stuck on the internet not experiencing life. Try it, you may like it.

Social-Networking Sites?

The use of social networking, photo hosting, and online video websites represent a significant shift in online user behavior.

What is your experience with these sites? What is you favorite? Do you account with any of them? What are the pros and cons? Which one do you recommend, and why?

MySpace is the leader in social networking, receiving 82% of those visits among the top 20 social networking websites in September 2006. Then, come FaceBook (www.facebook.com), Bolt (www.bolt.com), Bebo (www.bebo.com), Orkut (www.orkut.com), Gaia Online (www.gaia.com)

In photo sharing, there are : PhotoBucket (www.photobucket.com), Flickr (www.flickr.com), YouTube (www.youtube.com).

There are others, here's a listing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_soc...

Social-Networking Sites?
Hello,

I have used various social networking, photo, hosting and on-line video websites.

I've used my space. I like it because it has live hosting.

I can meet up with friends and family. It;s so easy,

even my 10yr old niece has a page.... I don't like when the service is down or you've posted a bulletin or a comment, and you get an error code.....

I like photobucket and your file host because you can put as many pics and videos as you want.

You have personal accounts for sharing your information, and it's share away!

I was referred to OBC On-line booty Call by a friend, I thought it was too basic, and I didn't like it because the responses to find someone available can be over-whelming. You decide who you want to contact you. It has pen-pal messaging with other users,I didn't like it because it was too confusing.

I've used blackplanet too, because they have chat rooms. It's pretty easy to set up. You just can't leave a message to people, the way you expect it too.

My favorite being RLC Red Light Center. I like it because it

has live hosting. I can design my webpage the way I'd like it

to look. I can BE my 3D avatar and socialize with new people, chat, and party (they have a virtual world)

Not to mention. It is a website with adults on it. I don't always like to socialize with teenagers, that's just me.

Here's a few of the link sites to check out, one being my myspace page

and the other RLC (red light center) vs myspace.

Hope this helped some
Reply:Photobucket is my favorite photo/video hosting site. Extremely easy to use and upload. I have never had a problem with it. MySpace is very laggy at certain times of the day, and a lot of the time, after posting a bulletin, you get a message saying, "Sorry an unexpected error has occurred." Classmates.com is very very basic. I heard FaceBook really has a lot of privacy issues. MySpace and Photobucket are really the most useful. Blogger is the best though! :-)
