What language are the social networks and other sites like this are written in ?

Right. So, I know nothing about website programming, other than html. I was just wondering: all those social network sites and places like this, where you can start groups, add friends and all, what language is this, most of the time, php, dhtml, something else ??

Thanks.

What language are the social networks and other sites like this are written in ?
Facebook is written in PHP. You can tell because the page extentions end in "php".

Myspace is written in ColdFusion. It's page extensions end in "cfm".

However, as the previous poster noted there could be a dozen other technologies involved. However the page extensions are a pretty good indication of at least one of these technologies. Other common page types are ASP, ASPX (also known as ASP.Net) and pl for Perl.

Some websites such as yahoo and okcupid mask the typical flags that can help you determine what language they're written in but I'm sure a little research on Google could probably help you out with that.

If you're asking because you'd like to learn a little bit about how these sites function I'd suggest learning PHP or ASP.Net. I would highly advise that you avoid ColdFusion.
Reply:They are mostly written with php + htaccess + mysql + ruby.

The majority are hosted on servers with Apache, and generally make use of db caching, and cluster servers to manage load.
Reply:since most of them are quite big, and have to scale well, i'm pretty sure they're NOT written in PHP, Perl or ASP. I guess most of them are written in Java or in a combination of several languages. I once heard that Amazon is not a single application but a combination of hundreds of services; each service can be written in a different language. it's up to the developers which language they use.
Reply:They all use server side languages, like PHP, ASP, Perl, Python, etc.

Cost of creating a social networking site?

How much would it cost to create a social networking site? (I mean if you paid someone to do it)

Cost of creating a social networking site?
Not much... but there are so many free choices why not do it yourself? See GraffitiCMS, blognet and others.
Reply:how would you make profit though?
Reply:it will cost a bit of money. But you will also need your own servers which will cost a lot.

What's the best social networking site?

What do you think is the best social networking site you've been to? I like Perfspot although the population are not as astounding as myspace. Friendster is a filipino country, while myspace is like an american territory. Facebook has the most number of elite members in the society?

What's the best social networking site?
Facebook it the best by far. It is secure and easy to find people you know. It is also one of the biggest social networks with people all around the word and nearly every college
Reply:Years ago, I had xanga but it got boring (who wants to write about their day). I thought I would never join a networking site again until....

Two months Ago I joined facebook and was able to reconnect with friends I thought I lose contact with. It has really fun apps you can do with your friends.

It's also very safe and secure which are the bonus.

You also get to join networks so its easy to communicate

I need a new social networking site?

Myspace is completely overrun by idiotic "scene" kids who just want to whore their pictures and kids under the age of 15 who just want to be cool.

Facebook is quickly following suit it seems. I just found out today that it was opened up to everybody! And the applications are driving me crazy!

I like being able to keep in touch with my friends and listen to new music and share my pictures and stuff, but is there a different social networking site that I can use without having to deal with young kids and emo ****?

I use facebook and tried bahu but those are ok. I want to use a really awesome social networking site plz recommend ur favorites!

What is the best social networking site?
MySpace, Bebo and Facebook being the most widely used in the anglosphere (North America, England, and so on), Google’s Orkut, third-string in the U.S. but dominant in countries like Brazil and India, and Friendster being the most widely used in Asia. Facebook might be the most immensely popular social networking service today.

Who will be willing to give my new social networking site a chance?

I am 20yrs old and a entrepreneur. I am in the process of launching my very own new innovative social networking website! This isn't spam or anything, I am a real person.

I have grown tired of the limited possibilities on Facebook, and Myspace and have decided to create a site to share with the world.

The name of the site is howyoulivingonline.com and it will serve as your home on the internet! Howyoulivingonline is a social networking site that interconects the world while taking you on the ride of your life. I am all about giving users an experience and not a whole bunch of features that don't really serve a purpose.

Howyoulivingonline.com is innovation at its best.

I know some people believe that Facebook is the best, and can't be topped, but nothing last forever. Afterall. aren't you guys and gals tired of having your privacy invaded by Facebook and being spammed by Myspace?

Look out, howyoulivingonline.com coming soon to a web bowser near you!!!1

Who will be willing to give my new social networking site a chance?
repeat these to yourself outloud:

i facebooked her man!

i howyoulivingonlined her man!

I was on facebook last night

I was on how you living online last night

i have all my friends on facebook

i have no friends on howyoulivingonline because... nobody else even knows it exists!!

the last part kinda is the biggie - you need a lot of press about new social network sites because everyone's already established. After all, myyearbook, yuwie, xanga, facebook, myspace, and so many more exist - why would people sign up for a new one unless its 100% innovative and their friends are already on it?
Reply:Dont even try to compete with facebook.
Reply:i think a different name might help, i don't really like the one you have. it doens't roll of the tongue like facebook.

Myspace, facebook or other social networking site laws?

Name all the laws or causes of action you can think of that relate or could relate to a person's participation on a social networking site. For instace, intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, identity theft, etc. Have fun! Let's see how many we can name, and if you know of a specific story and a website to verify it, I'd love to see that too....

Myspace, facebook or other social networking site laws?
Defamation and related torts are the obvious ones. Identity theft is unlikely.

What you want a social networking site to have? like features?
I'd like a social networking site that wasn't so anti-social which is what Myspace is now.. Everyone has a private profile, no one wants to interact with anyone. Myspace has completely gone down hill. It's the first Anti-Social Networking site, heh.

So basically a site what Myspace was 2 or so years ago would be nice.
Reply:every that myspace hav but better cause ppl always gettn hacked on my space my myspace was hacked and i never gave out my info but i would hav more music and i would make it for gids 10-20 or something cause young kids be gettin on there sayin they 15 or so but most of my friends are deleting there myspace and thinking about creating there own and if they go trew with it then i will help myspace is ok.

How do I start my own social networking site at lowest cost possible?

I know basic html, is it enough to build my own social networking site?

where can I find information on skills required to build my own social networking site

How do I start my own social networking site at lowest cost possible?
Basic HTML will not be enough.

You will need to know other technologies as well, particularly the server-side stuff. On top of that you're going to need to be good with databases - and being _good_ with databases is a whole lot different from say, "knowing a bit of Access"...

I'd say as a bare minimum you'd need to know HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL - and that's as the _minimum_.

For information on these languages, simply search the net for FAQs and tutorials.

Rawlyn.
Reply:It would be difficult. A better thing might be to start a "Social Bookmarking Guide" site. This would be a great idea for a site since social bookmarking is so popular. With that you can use Site Build It. It's the easiest way to build a successful site.

What's the best social networking site?

I'm finally jumping on the bandwagon and getting ready to join a social networking site. Between Facebook, Myspace, and everything else, it's hard to choose.

What do you think is the best site? I a place that's fun and entertaining. Plus, I want to try to get my friends to join me and connect, so I'm looking for one that might appeal to a bit group of people.

What's the best social networking site?
Well a lot of it depends on what your personal preferences are; MySpace.com allows a lot more customisation on their pages (such as using HTML and CSS) as well as adding music to backgrounds, wallpaper, etc...

It is exactly this reason why MySpace has been often criticised. Also, I've seen a lot more so-called "hacks" for MySpace then for Facebook, because MySpace has very large networks, as opposed to Facebook's multiple networks.

Facebook is simple; it doesn't allow any customisation. That way more adults prefer Facebook due to its simplicity rather than a "noisy and eyesore" MySpace. Facebook also has application one can use, although a profile page with too many clutter apps can be frowned upon.

It all comes to a matter of what you prefer. There are other sites (Xanga, Bebo, etc...) too.

Personally, I prefer Facebook, but I don't have anything against MySpace either.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Blogging software for social networking site?

What is the blogging software to allow millions of users to create their own blogs on a social networking site? Most of the software available is for one user to create his own bloag and post on his site. Is there any blogging software available that can be used by any user to create his/her own blog, post comment on someone else's blog etc? Just like in MySpace?

Blogging software for social networking site?
No. It's custom built. Think of the hardware requirements necessary to handle so many people at once. You need multiple servers working together, load balancing, database replication. Similarly, the software needs to be compatible with the optimised hardware, and be very powerful itself. Unless you got money to buy MySpace itself, don't expect to get your hands on anything like that.

Voice Messaging Social networking site?

Hi Guys,

Just brainstorming, what you think of a social networking site like Orkut/Facebook but instead of written message if friends can exchange voice messages? Everyone would have a scrap book or inbox full of personal messages from friend. Won't that be more fun and personal than writing in words?

lemme know why or why not it would work!

Building a Social Networking Site?

I already bought a domain through GoDaddy. Now I need to build the Social Networking site. Is there a tutorial out there, a program, or code i can use? Don't know much about building websites, but I have an idea and want to try to make it work.I would love to use something like Ning.com or Kickadds but doesnt look like they let you use your own domain (if there is a way, i would love to hear it). I can host on a friend's server if needed. Please help.

Thanks.

Building a Social Networking Site?
Ning lets you use your own domain name for a small fee. This is from their question and answer page:

http://help.ning.com/?cat=45

"Can I use a different domain name (e.g. www.example.com) for my network?

Absolutely. You need to purchase the premium service, "Use your own domain name" and configure your domain name to point to your social network. This requires you to work with the domain registrar from whom you purchased your domain name. It is $4.95 per month.

Before you can map your domain you must register it. Ning does not offer domain registration services but we do recommend GoDaddy, Network Solutions, Yahoo!, or 1%26amp;1.

Next, sign up for the "Use your own domain name" premium service and let us know what your domain is. To do this sign in to your network as the Network Creator, click on the Manage tab, locate the "Ning Resources" box and click on the "Add Premium Services" link. On the Premium Services Page, type your purchased domain name into the URL box and click the button to "Proceed to Payment."

Finally, it's time to set up the appropriate DNS records with your domain registrar or host. This may be tricky because different registrars provide different tools for managing DNS, and some don't provide the ability to customize your DNS in the way that's required for domain mapping to work correctly. For this reason, we have tutorials for our four recommended domain name registrars: GoDaddy, Network Solutions, Yahoo!, and 1%26amp;1

Once you've configured your domain name at your registrar or host, you'll need to wait up to a couple of days (though it's often faster) while the configuration propagates around the world."
Reply:You can find out step by step guide on how to create a website at http://oktutorial.com/webdesign.htm

You can even earn from adsense using your website.

What social networking site uses CSS?

Okay because my youth group started a social networking site and you can put a css layout on it, so what other layouts can I use for it? Like Xanga, myspace, bebo, etc. You understand what I'm saying?

What social networking site uses CSS?
in theory any website that does not remove or alter html tags from the entry boxes of the profile editor would support css.

you won't be able to use css layouts from ANY other website for your youth groups site, to apply css styling to elements in a page those elements need to be referred to by name...which are unique in nearly every website on the internet.

in short, myspace layouts won't work for xanga, bebo won't work on myspace, xanga layouts won't work on bebo. none of them will work on anything else - a css stylesheet has to be written from scratch *specifically* for a particular site which will normally apply styles to unique *named* objects on that site.

myspace, bebo, xanga, everything apply their own id's to sections of their site which are formatted using css - 'layout' sites consist of css which also use the id's of a specific site to format it, that code won't work on any other site.

to create custom layouts for your youth group's site you'll need to learn at the very least basic html and css then create your own css code based on the id names assigned to the objects you want to style.

Social network sites a mere fad?

I want to create a social networking site but it seems that they seem to be mere fads what do you think?

Social network sites a mere fad?
Yeah - definite fad. I joined Facebook - for about 2 weeks then it drove me mad. They are inane and childish on the whole.
Reply:social networking sites are not fads I have been doing them since high school and I'm 25 and I still do them in a way this is a social networking site so no I don't think they will go under not for a while maybe you should do a search engine site
Reply:There will be a huge growth and interest in niche social networking in 2008 partly thanks to sites such as Ning. Niche sites offer advertisers highly targeted demographics.

Users also want to connect with like-minded communites of people rather than get lost in the huge populations of facebook, myspace et al.

Search engines like http://findasocialnetwork.com help users and advertisers locate niche social networking sites thus promoting their use and visibility.

What kind of talented team do I need to assemble to build a high quality social networking site?

What kind of team do I need to build to build a high quality social networking site such as Myspace??? I see sites that I want to look like mine.... I want category selection like eBay...I a want video software system/management like YouTube... Mostly I want this site to look like YouTube but members can build their pages a little better - like with Myspace...and I want category selection like eBay for posting videos...rating systems...membership management...do I need to hire a whole team of people?...what's the best way to know what to pay without being ripped off....hand picked by me or should I hire someone to hire?????? HELP! Thank YOU!

What kind of talented team do I need to assemble to build a high quality social networking site?
I guess first you have to figure out what kind of software/hardware you are going to use. Freewares..PHP MYsql..Java/ .net(Microsoft) ...

Then hire a senior consultant (an architecht) who is familiar with all these technologies and who can explain what you will need to build that you want to build..

Then hire your team with his help or you can always find somebody to do that for you.

Befor you should start hiring have a clear pictue of what you are going to build..

Lot of time is wasted in requirement gathering if the project in not fully planned and people are hired to code.

Hope this helps..

Is it OK if a headhunter approaches you on a social networking site?

Social networking sites mean new candidate pools for headhunters. Do you think it is OK if a headhunter approaches you based on data on your myspace/orkut/facebook etc. profile?

Is it OK if a headhunter approaches you on a social networking site?
I think it is okay. Maybe they have a great opportunity that would be good for you too. It doesn't mean you have to make a commitment. You should always hear people out and see what types of opportunities are out there for someone with your background.

Why is Friendster the most common social networking site in the Phils.?

I just noticed that most of my friends in school have a Friendster. It's like Friendster is the only social networking site they know! Their are other sites like Tagged, Bebo, MySpace, Facebook, Hi5 and many more but it seems like they only know Friendster! I'm getting sick of it.

Why is Friendster the most common social networking site in the Phils.?
idk i think Phillipines is the Friendster Capital of the world. and few people have Facebook and Vibe maybe because some people are not aware of it, or they prefer Friendster all the way.lol

Should congress require schools and public libraries to block social-networking web sites?

Yes. Congress is supposed to do what is best for society.. If that means blocking social networking so that people become smarter, then so be it. Why should computer resources be wasted on social networking when it could be used on more productive things.

Should congress require schools and public libraries to block social-networking web sites?
That would go against the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Reply:No, Congress shouldn't be in charge of what I read (sometimes I wonder if they should be in charge of the country, let alone what I read.) That's the first amendment. In the case of children, parents and not Congress should be in charge of what children read.
Reply:No.

That would be the equivalent of "blocking" the right to read certain books.
Reply:Yes they should. Social networking sights do not contain anything of value.

They could simply place the condition on public money they give.

Is there room for another social networking site?

I have a friend who is spending a fortune develop a new social networking site. He's attitude is there is always room in the market but I'm not so sure? I know people want something new and sometimes some of the sites becuase they are so big not don' really have that personal touch. You know that saying 15mins of fame or 1 gig of privacy?...Your thoughts are welcome :-)

Is there room for another social networking site?
Nope. New social networking sites have done their "3 months" are now suffering at staggering money losses (server costs, traffic, bandwidth, no advertisments to offset costs)

these type of things are "fads" and as with every fad, they are good for a short time and fade away. Unless you have a major media advertising back up (ie myspace is owned by Fox) he will be SOL.
Reply:I would say yes and no.

If he has a new spin on it, yes. For example supporttube.com is a new spin on youtube.com.
Reply:Of course there's room, it would need something original going for it to make it stand out and last.
Reply:sure theres room, as long as it offers something new and is done well.

im not a big fan of myspace, it seems full of goths to me. i would join one where rock music was not allowed.... but thats just me bieng fussy.

Linked in can really help. He can also dip his toes into the water by going through temp agencies like Robert Half Accounting or Account Temps to try out different types of finance jobs and get PAID before he picks out a new career.

Also, his college where he got his Ph.D., even if it was years ago, will usually be thrilled to help an alumni change career directions (they someday hope he'll donate money once he's successful), and they can possibly get him into the annual on campus job fairs. They will definitely have lots of job connections.

Is Yahoo Answers a 'Social Networking' site?

... or is it merely a gateway to social networking?

What are your views ... likes and dislikes ... of sites such as MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Y!360 and how do they relate to Q%26amp;A sites and general forums such as Y!Answers, MyLot and others?

Is Yahoo Answers a 'Social Networking' site?
Regardless of the questions and answers we see here, this site is not meant to be a social networking site. (There are chat rooms and singles sites for that type of thing).

Even if Y! Answers were meant for social networking, so many people have been stalked, harrassed, etc. that they are hiding their questions and answers, as well as their contacts. Many are not allowing fans or email any more.

I think it was better before the networks started (even though I've been rather fortunate with most of the people in mine). It seems to have created more problems (again stalkers, etc.).

Many, many people don't even come back to choose the best answers to their own questions any more. It's like they post a question, then disappear until they're ready to post further questions--and don't really care what the answers are.

I opened a MySpace, and never returned. I started a 360, but have not completed it, and don't know if I ever will (it remains visible to myself, only). I admit ignorance to Facebook and Bebo--they are Greek to me...

I truly hope that more people are realizing how dangerous the internet can be--especially the young kids who pretend to be adults. For that matter, 'adults' are still vulnerable to all sorts of sickos...

Social networking should be done out in public, with real, live people who you can see, hear, etc. Okay?
Reply:I think its a gateway to social networking..
Reply:Wow!! lots of heavy questions.

1. Is Yahoo Answers a 'Social Networking' site? Answer: Yes, for me. I am also learning a lot from this site; such as, learn how to canning all my vegetables, and learn how the other feels.

2. What are your views ... likes and dislikes?

Answer: I like it a lot.

3. What are your views of sites such as MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Y!360?

Answer: I don't use any of these site yet. I am not ready to expose myself to everyone in the world yet. Still hiding.

4. How do they relate to Q%26amp;A sites? general forums such as Y!Answers

Answer: Except Y 360° that it kind of relate, I don't know anything about the rest.

5.MyLot and others?

Answer: Don't understand this question. You lost me here!!!
Reply:No, it is not a networking site; it can be a gateway if used properly.

I do not use anything but 360 - and like it when it is working right.

They do not relate to Q%26amp;A sites because they have nothing to do with Q%26amp;A.

Who wants to help create a social networking site?

Hi everyone, I have been thinking about this long and hard and I have decided I would like to create a Social Networking Site, but I don't know where to start. I have the code and the files, but I don't know how to apply them and get the website to work. If anyone knows how, I would love to make this site a partnership and we will manage the site 50/50. All you have to do is help get the site up and running and then we will be the owners and hopefully it will grow. And, at first I would prefer a free web host until the site is getting really busy, then we can upgrade if we need to. Let me know if you are interested, I need someone with PHP experience and all of the code you need for these types of sites. Thanks.

Will a social networking site devoted to Malaysia/Southeast asia be popular and profitable?

Evaluate whether a social networking site devoted to Malaysians or the countries of South East Asia will be popular and profitable, or if you think one already exist, the existence of such a popular social networking sites in Malaysia. Provide your reasons or supporting information.

Will a social networking site devoted to Malaysia/Southeast asia be popular and profitable?
yes

this is because asia too is beginning to be in the forefront in technology and etc. and due to increasing globalism, social networking is important b/c people value the computer, cellphones, blogs / pages as a way to connect and keep in touch.

Therefore, with an introduction of sovial networking- it would be very profitable because people will be enthusiastic to use it.

However, there needs to be enough people with access to computers, and internet..

Social Networking & Site Promotion?

Thinking that one or more of the social networking sites like MySpace or FaceBook might a viable means of promoting one of my websites.

I have no experience with any of them and don't know which might be most effective or if any would make sense.

The site I want to promote is http://www.CanadianDots.ca and is a forum for the discussion of the .ca Canadian domain name market.

Any suggestions for which social networking site would be best to use and/or guides as to how to go about it would be appreciated.

Social Networking %26amp; Site Promotion?
The best guide I have read for using Social Networks for promoting websites (without breaking the rules) is Spacebankers. The author is a college student who paid his way through college doing this. He makes more than many adults with full time jobs. Check out his story below:

This website is great for web advertising. It's a free targeted advertising (based on you selecting various categories you would like to be included in) and link exchange network. You put other websites text ads on your page and yours appears on others. And it really is 100% free, forever. While it's not something that guarantees traffic it also doesn't cost anything, so why not try it?

Good luck!

What makes a social networking site great?

This is for a english class, how does social networking web sites affect our social life?
I don't know what grade level you're audience is, but I'm guessing fairly beginning.

The internet has enabled people to interact with others all over the world, and allowed a great exchange of ideas and lifestyles. Formally isolated people have an outlet for social activity.

It has also been counterproductive since it allows people to live in a fantasy world as well. They do not have to be truthful, but can be anyone they want to be. This means they do not have to actually interact with real people face to face and may further isolate them.

I would pick one position (chat rooms are good/chat rooms are bad for our social life) and then defend that position. Just mention the other side at the end. Stats are availabe through your online electronic library sources like ERIC and so on.

Just throw in some statistics somewhere at the beginning to please the teacher. For instance, stats on teens are that they are on social networking web pages a lot: 61% of 13- to 17-year-olds have a profile on a social interenet sites (like myspace). See the resource below. Usually just one stat will satisfy a beginning type class.

What do you think of a social networking site that only utilizes a person's picture with no other information.

I am looking for people's opinions. I have friends who have created a social networking site called At First Pic. People provide their pix with no other information. THey would like me to invest and be a partner. DO you believe this idea is safer, as it provides less details than other dating sites and that is also more intriguing and mysterious. Other friends I have asked are mixed or do not have any opinions. There are a lot of social sites; Yahoo Personals, e-harmony, etc. How does this idea sound to you?

What are some networking/ social / personals sites?
Hi,

This thing is really good, and has been praised by papers such as the Financial Times and the Sunday Times. Definite C£sh to be earned here.

Investment Required: None (not at any point will you have to pay up for anything or hand your details over as you can request to be paid by cheque)

I have earned a fair wad already and have been doing it for about a month.

It works like this:

You go through the referral link and sign up (takes about 2 mins and no personal details are needed)

What that does is it gives you your own web page with 1000+ links to website’s such as Amazon, Play, EBay, Argos etc etc. (save this page to your fave’s)

When ever you (or friends, read on) go to buy anything of the net or your friends that you’ve signed up and their friends and their friends so on so on buy anything you just go through your own site and buy as normal.

This is where it gets good because every thing you buy you get a % of the commission put back into your account on the webpage.

Now this is where it gets really interesting because if your friends sign up via your link they get a % commission but you get a % of that as well. And if they get their friends to sign up you get a commission of whatever they buy so on and this can go on for ages! So you don’t even have to buy to make money just sign up your friends and get them to sign up there so on so on. Money is so easily achievable with this. £££

Remember you are not scamming your friends by doing this because you will always only get 45% of the commission and the rest gets shared amongst your friends or you. there is a lot of money to be earned from this, see by playing on the income estimator on the website.

Click Here: http://www.ei42.com/grichardz/ to see my shop and to find out more (Click the "Find Out More" link at the Top Right of the page) or sign up using this referral link http://www.ei42.com/?10853595

You have to be referred to sign up to Ei42 as it is a networking so take the opportunity and start making ££££’s because this going to be the next internet craze.

This has been talked about on the national press scene by many top journalist. You really have nothing to lose and a lot to gain, you have to be referred to join so join now.

A little tip for when signing up friends, use applications such as Facebook, MSN, My Space to spread the word to your mates I did and it’s paid off no end. Also talk to them as some seem sceptical at first but there’s a lot to gain from this and nothing at all to lose.

Any questions I’ll be happy to answer them.

Happy Ei42’ing

What do you think it means when a person doesn't list their sexual preference on Social Networking sites?

I know I don't list my orientation because I'm hiding that I'm lesbian...but that's just my motivation. I'm interested in a girl and she answered everything but her orientation....is there hope?

NOTE: we both live in a very conservative small town

What do you think it means when a person doesn't list their sexual preference on Social Networking sites?
Some people just like their privacy. That's my best answer. Personally, I leave my sexual oriention blank as well, because I am Bi, but don't necessarily need my 12 year old niece and 15 year old sister to know all my secrets...not quite yet. However, I think it's probably safe to assume that anyone leaving that question blank is probably Bi or gay, or they would take the time to answer the question.
Reply:Thanks for the best answer points, chicka...and good luck with the girl ;)))

Oh ,and you're freakin hilarious...That "Captain Obvious" comment cracked me up! Sarcastic chicks rock!!

Reply:Same here, on Facebook I hid my sexual orientation option. I'm sort of in transition at the moment, only a few of my friends know I'm a lesbian, and I prefer not to spread it all over the internet before I can tell people in person, and I'm just not ready for that yet. Now that I think about it, it's probably pretty obvious to people that we are hiding something since everyone else has that filled out...

Yes there is hope, that's the same situation with me and my girlfriend, she had left that blank as well, and she just came out to me that she is a lesbian. Definetly go for it!! Good luck!

By the way you're so hot!! That girl is really lucky!
Reply:To Emily ^^ .... you can't KNOW about someone's sexual orientation just by looking at their picture. That's just being STEREOTYPICAL.... plain and simple.
Reply:when a straight person doesnt list it its because they forget or something when a gay or lesbian person doesnt list it its because they are not ready to show the world
Reply:definite hope hun! she might be questioning CATCH WHILE YOU CAN!!

although i do promote ppl to leave out their orientation on sites like this bc i dont feel its important to know whether someone is interested in men or women or both...bc ppl will like who they like. even if it says interested in men go for it.. u may surprise yourself. but if it says nothing then odds are..... ahha like myself... that they don't particularly want everyone and their 2nd cousin to know that they are in fact gay or bi. they might not be hiding it at all.... there are just some ppl out there that dont need to know about it. ya kno?!

its hard to tell sometimes though. i've fallen for a girl and i cannot, for the life of me, figure out her sexuality. what makes it worse is that i assume that people will think i like girls and i'm not butch either, i just don't act like straight girls do but her touching me, starring at me, asking me to massage parts of her body just makes me think that she does too. But then i don't know if thats how she acts with everyone...
Reply:There could be hope. maybe she's in the same boat you are.

or, maybe she just thinks it's none of anybody's bussiness until she gets to know them better. either way I think it's fine.
Reply:I think it means they don't think it's anyone else's business until they choose to make it someone's business.
Reply:It means MYOB. Mind Your Own Business.....because I'm gay.
Reply:i too dont list my orientation....but yea i can tell by ur picture, so if she is a lesbian im betting she can spot it.

What is your view on social networking sites?

WHen used appropriately they are great. I have used Myspace to find some old high school friends and things like that. Myspace specifically is quickly becoming a free venue of advertsiing for everything under the sun to the 30 and under crowd, and becomming more popular with the older crowd as well. I live in a metro area and almost every locally owned business, local recording artsists, and really anything you want to find is on myspace. Artists are using it to display their work and writers are using it as well.

What needs to happen is that the kids and teens need to be much better educated about how much info is safe to give out. I think they get overly concened with who is on their friends list and this and that, but the only thing new there is the specific venue.

What is your view on social networking sites?
when used for the right reasons it's great!

it all depends what your goal is!
Reply:eh...they are okay.
Reply:I have found them to be quite disturbing in most cases.

Do people usually feel fulfilled when they add a ton of new friends contacts on social networking sites...?

I'm talking about mass numbers like 100 or more. Aren't these really acquaintances or strangers and not true friends? What do you all think?

I don't have 100 or more, I couldn't keep up with that many! lol. I like the ones I do have. You can connect for different reasons. If you like a members questions, you can connect to them to see any new ones they post.

How can I find the market share for MySpace and it's competing social networking sites?

Specific information would be extremely helpful, but estimations will work as well.

I found this site for you.

How do i attract high school students to my website for free besides social networking sites.?

No matter your intended audience, you have to offer relevant content. In general terms, you shouldn't have info about gardening on a teen site, right? Make it real and keep it real.

If you are unsure about what to offer, ask a teen what they're interested in. If you need to find the search terms that the kids are searching for, try www.wordtracker.com to begin your research with their free research tool.

Keep interesting things on your website.

Do people who collect hundreds of friends -- 200 to 300 or more -- on social networking sites...?

...such as Myspace, for example, have much of a life outside it?

Just picturing people clicking away adding so-called digital friends, if they're even called that, sounds pathetic. If people are truly outgoing -- what about finding like-minded people in the real world instead of hiding behind a computer screen and a pumped up profile.

I wonder if these people actually meet the hundreds of friends they add in real life.

I'm referring to the older crowd in the 30 to 40 age range, not younger kids in their teens and 20s.

What is everyone's thoughts about this?

Do people who collect hundreds of friends -- 200 to 300 or more -- on social networking sites...?
They don't meet these hundreds of ppl, they just have to satisfy themselves that they are in touch with these ppl, and don't even cae abt them,...I have few friends in yahoo, but I regularly keep in touch with them via mail, some frineds, I have them on my list, coz I like reading their blogs.

The net is a medium of connection, these ppl choose to keep in touch ove r the net and sort of fool themselves with a pseudo security...pathetic indeed...but, that is life...
Reply:I think it's ridiculous too. I do happen to have a myspace, but I only have around 14 friends, and they are all my close friends. i refuse to add anyone who I do not know, or who I don't like. I think it's disgusting that these people ask to be your "friend" when in real life, they have to desire to be your friend whatsoever.
Reply:I always wonder the same.

I have 69 friends on myspace. I prefer to keep it that way. I know each and every one of them. :)

Have a good day.
Reply:no, not at all. I've met some people in the flesh that I met online and there is such a difference between the two, it's more advantageous to acquire friends who live in close proximity to you. If you really have trouble with intolerance, you may "click to save" your online friends more readily. Here, some of the people who are going to feel exposed by your question will defend it, saying they "know all of them personally", which of course is untrue.
Reply:they just add people without really being friends with them. i have about 24 "friends" on Myspace, but i know each and every one of them personally. they aren't just random people.
Reply:It's an interesting question. Some people know a lot of people in real life, and like to add them to their networks, so I don't think it's all just digital. When people find their old friends they knew from other places they've lived in, or past churches or work-places they've been involved with, and they add them to their group, such as on facebook, the numbers can add up quite fast.
Reply:I have about 150 on my facebook. I know each and every single one of them.

Id say about half of those, id actually hang out sometime with.

Then about like 20, i hang out with all the time at least once a week.

What do you call the website that lets you find people on social networking sites?

specialtyMatch/network

Why don't they allow you to publish your email address on social networking sites?

such as Yahoo Personals, Match.com or other online dating websites ??

Why don't they allow you to publish your email address on social networking sites?
Partly so you don't get solicited and mostly because you can give out your e-mail to a bunch of people and never pay their site. It's a way of keeping them self in business and not having a reliability problem.
Reply:I think it's a combination of both of the above answers actually. They need the money to help provide the service-keep the biz running basically. Also, it's a very real possibility that not everyone at their site is kosher-perhaps they are a serial killer or serial rapist or another type of crazy sicko-psycho. They need to be able to protect themselves from the people using their site suing them for getting them in touch with a wack job.

So in other words-yeah-it does suck that you can't just post a thing for people to contact you elsewhere-but it makes total biz sense.
Reply:For your protection I guess.Seems to me if you wanna give your email addy away you can.

But remember...most yahoo ids are the email addy...so....hint to that...or instant messenger. That is how you found me :P
Reply:They are protecting you from your own foolishness. There are plenty of weirdos out there. You gotta be cautious and proceed with caution. Giving out your personal contact info is neither.

Do you consider more than 100 friends that you've "met" via social networking sites real or superficial?

Depends on if you know them in real life. Can you really consider people you don't know in real life a friend?

Do you consider more than 100 friends that you've "met" via social networking sites real or superficial?
To me, real friends are hard to find and its takes alot of care and understanding from both sides to make the friendship work.
Reply:Absolutely superficial....real friends are people that you can count on no matter what. I have heard many times before that you can count yourself truly lucky to be able to have five true friends in your lifetime.
Reply:i wouldn't consider them "true" friends. like one you can depend on, or turn to.

they are just online acquaintances.
Reply:Superficial
Reply:i consider the handful...very real
Reply:Superficial. Very. That doesn't mean that they are not worth it. And a few might even become true friends with time and dedication. The first contact is always superficial anyway, right? But how nice it is to increase your opportunities to get to know new people!

Why do fat chicks often stick their tongues out in photos for social networking sites?

It just makes them look fatter - what's the point in doing it? Why, please, for the love of God, WHY???

Why do fat chicks often stick their tongues out in photos for social networking sites?
they think it makes em look sexy and thins their face out
Reply:My sincerest apologies if my words made you feel I was attacking you for your feelings, I was not. Why have you assumed I don't exercise and that I have a problem with food? This is most incorrect and shows again that you have a stereotypical view and contempt for fat women in general. Report It

Reply:Judging from your screenname, you're probably the kind of person who wants to get hate answers from people when you want attention instead.
Reply:Sorry Sunshine, I am a fat woman, not a chick and I have never stuck my tongue out like that. So here's a fat woman you can scratch off your contempt for fat chick's with tongue fetishes list.

I pray nothing in your life ever causes you to get fat, goodness knows you would never allow it to happen to yourself, but all fat chick's aren't that way by choice. Heck, maybe there is a fat chick's stick out your tongue club we don't know about that transmits secret codes in those photos.

I will have to check your responses again later as I too am interested in the additional FAT CHICK responses. hahahaha! Yes, this is laughable!

Wow....may need to research that one as we have all been placed in the fat pot for cooking for decades of ignorant bliss by the masses.

Bless you Sunshine....may enlightenment and wisdom hit you like bolts of lightening (but without the pain)
Reply:It's probably because they don't want their picture taken in the first place. Some feel they need to be the life of the party and have fun at their own expense before anyone else can. And you should rephrase your question to "Why do SOME fat chicks.." rather than over-generalizing that all fat chicks stick their tongues out.
Reply:they're just doing it for fun and self-expression. skinny girls do it to. thats really a stupid reason to hate fat girls.
Reply:Oh, they're not sticking their tongues out [on purpose].They're so fat that their tongue gushes out of their face. LOL
