Social Networking Sites - Scams and Viruses in Friend Requests?

I recently had a friend who signed up for MatchDoctor. I wanted to view her profile but it required me to create an account, so I created a fake account with no actual info (Not interested in dating, etc). A day later I get a friend request, and my profile has no info whatsoever. The friend request looks like it's from an actual person, but my question is why would somebody send a friend request to someone who has no info on their profile and might not even be a person? Do some of these people just mass 'friend request' others? I'm guessing that by accepting the friend request, I might get a virus or spyware or something like that, or compromise my computer's security in some way. I wanted to verify whether or not this happens on a regular basis and if there's a way to tell whether or not this is an actual person. It also makes me wonder what the motivation is to send a friend request to someone who doesn't have any actual info on their profile. Any answers/advice greatly appreciated.

You have also made a fake account here in yahoo answers with no name....got your answer
Reply:I have had that before, But i do believe that you cannot get any virus's or adware or anything from accepting the request, However clicking things on their profile may be where their hidden, My advice is to change your spam settings in your account settings and make it so they have to type out the letters so you dont get automated requests anymore.
Reply:Hi, sometimes, when someone ask you for a friend request, when you have no info on you, it could be either from the administrator or someone who wants to advertise their business. In the later case, usually, once you added that person as your friend, and you check his/her profile, there is usually an affiliate link, for selling a product or services. I joined www.hi5.com, I receive many of this request, some are just people who probably wants to be seen of having many friends and some are business advertisement. Another site www.ourspacs.com, once I joined I got one friend automatically, which is the admin of the site, welcoming me. It won't have any virus.
