What's the source of income for websites particulary social networking sites like orkut etc.?

Paid advertising. Whether one clicks on an ad or runs a search (then clicks on an ad) the social networking site receives a share. As more and more people spend more and more time on a social networking site it becomes a more attractive proposition for many advertisers.

Making this medium more powerful than television or print ads is the ability to generate contextual advertising. If users are discussing, say, widgets on a forum or message board then widget advertisers have their ads placed on that page. The users are happier since they would tend to be more interested in widget ads than generic ones and the advertisers increase the likelihood they will be paying for traffic that will convert to a sale, addition to an email list, or whatever the advertiser places on the ad's destination page.

Hope this helps!
